Hearing Protector

A Hearing Protector is a device that reduces the noise that you can hear, and as a result it protects your hearing. There are millions of people today who suffer from Industrial Hearing Loss, and if they had known just a portion of what we know today this could have easily been avoided. I still find it amazing when I walk into a factory with machines that are incredibly noisy and see people who don’t wear any hearing protection at all. When you talk to them, they say well I have already lost some of my hearing. The effort that it takes to throw on a few Foam Ear Plugs or to get a pair of ear muffs is still well and truly worth more than losing your hearing.

Regardless of how bad your hearing is, exposing yourself to more noisy environments without some sort of Hearing Protector is just plain silly. Price shouldn’t be an issue either, because you can get cheap hearing protection at so many stores. If you don’t like the way it feels, get custom made ear plugs, or get an expensive pair of ear muffs. There are a few things in life that are not replaceable, like your sight, ability to move and function correctly and your hearing. Without your hearing it’s difficult to function correctly as you have to continually ask people to repeat themselves, making your interaction uncomfortable and painful.

The two most common forms of a Hearing Protector is the common ear plug and ear muffs. Ear Plugs are generally made out of foam, although the custom ones tend to be made out of a more durable product. Ear Plugs are usually just squashed down to a small size, and then you slide them into your ears. The foam expands within a minute, blocking a large majority of the sound that you can hear. This tends to be the more popular way to protect your ears, although they are not rated for very high sounds. Consult the box of ear plugs that you have bought to see a decibel figure. If where you are working has noises above this, you want to get something a little better quality like a form of Electronic Hearing Protection.

If you don’t like the comfort, you can get a set of molded ear plugs. These are not very expensive and provided that you look after them, they will be a lot more comfortable and enjoyable. Of course, the next step is a set of Ear Muffs. These are basically the same as headphones, and they clamp over both ears, reducing the noise that you can hear. There are many different grades of ear muffs, ranging from the cheap ones at your local hardware store all the way to the more expensive air force ear muffs that are designed to block out the loudest noises that one can expose themselves to.

Some Ear muffs are electronic as well, and you can even get ones that play music too. At the end of the day it’s better to be wearing something than nothing, so make sure that you are prepared. A lot of people don’t like wearing Ear Muffs because they press on your head, or they are too hot. You can get some nice ear muffs which are comfortable to wear all day, and if it’s going to be a hearing protector for life then you are well and truly worth spending the extra money. At the end of the day you don’t want to be uncomfortable when working either, so get something that fits very well.

The advantage of wearing ear muffs is that they reduce sound from entering your ear drums much better. Sound still gets into your ears through the skin, regardless of whether you have ear plugs in or not. As a result, if you are working in a very noisy location wearing Ear Muffs is a better idea. Some people choose to wear both, and this often yields the best results. If you are working in a hot environment you just have to get used to it. A little bit of discomfort is worth the benefits of having hearing when you are 60 years old! Losing your hearing is one of the worst things that you can do, so look after the ears!
