Custom Ear Plugs
If you are looking into Custom Ear Plugs, there is a good chance that you understand the risks of exposing your ears to noises that are uncomfortable. Even if they are not uncomfortable, you can be doing permanent damage to your hearing by not wearing Ear Muffs or Ear Plugs. For a large majority of people, wearing disposable ear plugs is the way to go. For some people though, these simply don’t cut it. This is usually to do with the level of comfort that is experienced with the cheap, foam disposable ear plugs but it can also have to do with the decibel rating of the ear plugs. Foam Ear Plugs will rate less than Custom ones.
Every ear is a slightly different shape, and as a result getting Custom Ear Plugs will provide you with the best hearing protection. Of course, wearing a top quality set of Ear Muffs is usually just as good of an option, but it comes down to where you are working, and the time that you spend in noisy environments. Ear Muffs tend to be uncomfortable over extended periods of time, and they are rather big and bulky. I much prefer to wear a set of Ear Plugs, as these are light, easy to carry around, don’t make you sweat and they don’t give you a headache after wearing them for hours on end.
To get a good quality set of Custom Ear Plugs you are looking at around the $200 mark. You can get ones which are made custom when they are put in your ears. By this I mean that some are moldable enough to be classed as Custom Ear Plugs. I would suggest that you go the whole way though, and get something that is comfortable to wear. Remember though that in very loud environments a set of Ear Muffs will always be better. The reasoning behind this is that sound can still get into your ear drum through the flaps of your ears (or the skin). When you are doing very loud drilling, you will still hear it quite well regardless of how good your ear plugs are as the sound goes through the ear (just not through the main hole).
These Custom Ear Plugs are something that you want to take good care of. They are not the sort of item that you want to be replacing every few weeks because you lost them. Ensure that you have a good case to store them in, that you keep them clean and that you always put them down in the same place. If you are working in a very noisy environment keep a set of Ear Muffs around the place, incase, you do misplace them. There is nothing worse than having to work a day without adequate ear plugs. Ear Protectors are your best friend!
To get your own set of Custom Ear Plugs made up you need to visit an Audiologist. They will be able to suggest the best material to use, and they will fit them up then and there. Ensure that you wear them at all times when in even slightly noisy environments and you will thank yourself in a few years time!
